Jorge Masvidal has a lot of options for his next opponent, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be competing for the UFC welterweight title when he does make his return.
That’s according to UFC president Dana White, who continued to tease the possibility that Masvidal won’t be facing welterweight king Kamaru Usman later this year.
Now White concedes that Usman vs. Masvidal is the fight that makes the most sense but he’s still not ready to commit to it happening next. Instead, White continues to hint at other possibilities after first teasing “something interesting” for Masvidal a few days ago.
“The obvious fight for Masvidal is Usman,” White said when speaking to Jime Rome on Tuesday. “That’s the fight. He should be fighting for the title against Usman. We’re locking [Tyron] Woodley in, Woodley’s going to fight in a couple weeks.
“Get Usman and either Masvidal wants the fight or the rematch with [Colby] Covington. I don’t know right now. There’s a lot of options for that guy.”
Colby Covington’s name entering the fray is a new addition after he suffered a fifth-round TKO loss to Usman this past December. He’s been calling for a rematch against Usman ever since and he also shares plenty of history with Masvidal after training together for several years at American Top Team in Florida.
Another name that’s come up in recent days is former two-division champion Conor McGregor, who Masvidal called out numerous times over the past six months.
During a recent appearance on the “Menace and the Man” podcast, White was asked about Masvidal and McGregor’s name was tossed out as a potential opponent. Following that interview, White saw numerous reports that McGregor was being considered for Masvidal’s next fight but he wants to make it clear that wasn’t what was said.
“People are writing stories like I said yesterday that we’re going to do Conor vs. Masvidal. I never said that,” White stated. “The guys that I was doing an interview with were pushing me on that fight and I’m like yeah it’s interesting. Anything is possible.
“I didn’t say that was the fight that was going to happen. People are writing that today but not true.”
For now the speculation continues when it comes to Masvidal’s next fight not to mention what’s looming on the horizon for Usman and the welterweight title. One thing for certain is nothing is set in stone as White and the UFC matchmakers plot the course for the remainder of the year.
